Trisomy 21 Online Community

We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

BIRTH TO 3 YEARS OLD

  • "ABC For You and Me"
Website: Can see it on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0807501018/102-8993975-0687330?v=glance
Explanation: This is an alphabet book which features a child with Down syndrome along with every letter. Each letter is shown in upper and lower case. The illustrations are vivid, colorful photographs capturing a child with a simple object that starts with each letter of the alphabet. For example, 'A' is for apple, 'B' is for ball.
Testimonial: This is by far Abby's favorite ABC book!! We've had this book since she was about 1 year old and read it together almost daily still at almost 3 1/2 years old. Abby is able to really focus on each letter as the pages are simple yet engaging.  She also chooses to 'read' it on her own quite often. This book is recommended for children ages 4-8, but we believe children as young as 1 year can start enjoying this great book.

  • Baby's First Impressions - Volume 6 - Animals (Video)
    Company: Small Fry Productions
    Location: Atlanta, Georgia
    Phone: 800-521-5311
Explanation: Video that teaches animals and their sounds.
Personal Testimonial:  This is a fun, fairly interactive video that teaches ALL kinds of animals and the sounds they make. It has segments for zoo animals, domestic animals, wild animals, and farm animals. After each segment, the narrator asks "what do you see?" "what kind of animal is this?" and then waits for a bit then gives the answer (which is also written on the screen). There is a ton of fun footage of each animal, set to music, with a few facts thrown in, and plenty of time that you could teach your child the sign for the animal, as well as reinforce the sounds the animals make. The video is somewhat "Baby Einsteinish" and is pretty good at keeping one's attention It's about 30 minutes long, so just right for little one's (and mommies) attention spans!

  • Blue's Clues: "All Kinds of Signs" Video
    Company: Blue's Clues
    Website:
    http://www.amazon.com
Explanation: "Preschoolers play along with Steve to figure out where Blue wants to have her snack-by following all kinds of signs-from directional signs to American Sign Language! And in a second great game of Blue's Clues, kids continue to learn about signs by following maps to figure out where Blue wants to go. Get clued in to "All Kinds of Signs" with these two exciting episodes of Blue's Clues!" In this video children will learn: understanding and reading signs, learning American Sign Language, Reading body and gestures language, understanding geography, reading maps, and location and identifying items."
Testimonial: This the the first Blue's Clues video we bought and Abby has really enjoyed since she was about 2years old (& still now at 3 1/2yrs old).  We love that it's so interactive!! Abby always enjoys videos that use her "first language"-signing, and it is very helpful that it teaches all the various "signs" within our world... from American Sign language to body gestures to road signs. We highly recommend it for all Blue's Clues fans as well as the less avid fan, like Abby!!

  • Blue's Clues "Shapes and Colors" Video
    Company: Blue's Clues
    Website: http://www.amazon.com
Explanation: This is a two part video, the first is "Shape Searchers" and the second is "Colors Everywhere!"  In Shape Searchers: "The shape searchers are searching all over the house for all kinds of shapes-from circles and squares to ovals and octagons! But where else does Blue want to search for shapes?? Preschoolers collect clues to *figure it out* while helping Joe collect triangles, rectangles, crescents and more. In "Colors Everywhere"-"Blue and Joe are finger-painting in the backyard to make their portrait of pals! They need to mix the right colors to make orange for Orange kitten, purple for Purple Kangaroo, and magenta for Magenta? Who else does Blue want to paint in her portrait? As preschoolers learn about colors with Joe, they'll look for Blue's Clues to figure it out." This video also has two bonus episodes of Blue's Clues form "Arts and Crafts." This video promotes: colors identification, color mixing, visual perception, shape recognition, matching skills, and basic geometry. (Age recommendations 2-6yrs)
Testimonial: Shapes have been a tough concept for Abby to learn, which is why we got this video. She LOVES it & has mastered many shapes with the aide of this great video. I like the way they work on colors and shapes in such a fun way in this video and the interactive quality of all Blue's Clues videos.  This is Abby's first introduction to color mixing and it's quite fascinating to her at this time (she's 3 1/2 yrs old).  I think this video can be used to reinforce and help aide in teaching these important preschool lessons while making it FUN for kids! I'd recommend this for any child 3yrs or older.

  • Getting Dressed (video)
    Company: Ladybug Productions
    Phone: 1-866-408-5437
    Website: http://www.allbymyself.com/
Explanation: This is a video showing lots of kids learning to dress themselves. It has peppy music and a cute little ladybug narrator named Buddy, who likes to say “You can do it – just stick to it!”
Personal Testimonial: This is an adorable video that Lizzy loved. She was 3 ½ when we got it, and was dressing herself a bit already, but this video was definitely instrumental in creating the desire in her to do the whole job all by herself. Before long she wouldn’t have it any other way in fact. Kids seem to love seeing other kids in videos so I think that was a big part of why she loved to watch it so much. She will still occasionally pull it out to watch.

    Website: http://www.vickilew.com/
Explanation:  Another potty training video – very musically intensive……great tunes…..scenes of kids engaged in common activities – swimming, playing at the park, karate class, etc.
Personal Testimonial: We loved this video and Lizzy continues to watch it now and then. And if you find yourself inadvertently singing “hey, hey, I gotta go” in public, it’s not nearly as bad as finding yourself singing “She’s a super duper pooper” from the Potty Time video !

  • "I Spy Little Animals" Book
Published by: Scholastic Inc, Cartwheel Books, Copywrite 1998.
    Rhymes by: Jean Marzollo
    Photographs by: Walter

    Website: http://www.amazon.com
Explanation: This book is from the popular "I Spy" series but this is a simplified board book, perfect for younger readers.  On each page you will read the "clue" on the left hand side, which not only names the object they are asking you to find, but shows a large picture of the object. On the right hand side is a page that contains those objects among several others in photographs so that you can scan and search for the given objects. So the reader is asked to find two objects per page among several objects. Pages are colorful and vivid with life-like photographs to engage toddlers and young children.

Testimonial: This is our first "I Spy" book and it has withstood two years of avid reading by Abby. It offers a great opportunity to sit down & interact with your child while playing the fun filled game of finding the objects (which is an important developmental task). I like how they show a large picture on the left hand side of the object you are seeking and we enjoy the colorful, life-like photographs. Some pages are more difficult than others, but even at a young age Abby enjoyed looking for the objects and developed some great scanning skills as well as patience with a little help from Mom or Dad. Abby is so proud when she finds the objects, so it is highly rewarding! We also like that once she mastered finding many of the objects, we could play our own game by searching for other objects (at the back of the book it offers a list of additional objects to search for throughout the book). I highly recommend this book along with all the "I Spy" books (there are several for younger children in board book form and while children grow they can be exposed to the 'harder' "I Spy" books). While I see no age recommendations for this book, I would recommend this book for ages 1-5yrs.

  • Love and Learning Kits
    Company Name: Love and Learning
    Address: P.O. Box 4088, Dearborn MI, 48126
Phone: Questions call: 313 581 8436 (Joe and Susan Kotlinski)
    E-mail: kotlin@ameritech.net
    Website: http://loveandlearning.com/
Explanation: This company sells learning kits that include books, video and audio tapes. The kits are meant to aide your child in learning to site read from a very young age. The recommended process is to have your child watch the videos and read the books to your child daily as well as play audio tapes when your child goes for naps or bedtime. The videos, audio tapes and books all highlight the same words and break them down into phonetic sounds. All materials are very plain - black print on white type of thing. This is done to eliminate other distractors and help your child focus on what is being taught.
Personal Testimonial: I have never used these materials as strictly as the program outlines but I have found that Mikey enjoys both the books and the videos. We have been using them since he was about 14 months old (he is 5 years old now) and he will often pull out the videos and play them and say or sign each of the words as they come up. He will also sometimes ask to do the books or sit and "read" the books himself. I think the program would get the results they say if it was followed in the exact manner they say... but also feel the program is entertaining and educational in the manner we use them.

  • Sesame Street-"Learning To Share"
    Company: Sesame Street
    Website: http://www.amazon.com
Explanation: "Like most kids Elmo sometimes has trouble taking turns and sharing his toys. Even with his best friend Zoe. With a little help from Sesame Street favorites Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar, and special guest Katie Couric, Elmo discovers sharing with friends makes playtime twice as much fun.  Filled with songs and silliness, "Learning To Share" is a very special introduction to the *Sesame Street Kids Guide To Life*-a new home video series that helps make growing up more fun. Plus Katie Couric gives parents some helpful tips for guiding kids through learning to share." (This video has a 45 minute running time)

Testimonial: Abby being an only child and just starting preschool brings the issue of teaching the concept of sharing to the forefront for us as a family, but all children need to learn this important life lesson. Abby's a huge Elmo and Sesame Street fan and thoroughly enjoys this video. It's nice for her to see her "best buddy" Elmo having problems with sharing and how he works through it. I like the incorporating of cathy songs and in general the wonderful life lessons taught in this video. I recommend it for ages 18m-5yrs old.

Testimonial: Chloe started watching this video when she was almost 21 mos.  She loves the children and would rather watch Signing Time instead of Blue's Clues.  She learned all of the signs and had a great time doing it.  She still asks to watch the video many times each day.  Mommy may get a litte tired of watching it, but not Chloe!  I say this is good for all ages, because I have been learning my signs from this video too.

  • Usborne Books
    Company: Usborne Books
    E-mail: jillsbookit@adelphia.net
    Website: http://www.usbornehouse.com/
Explanation: "Interaction is the name of the game these days.  Usborne takes the "ho-hum" out of reading by
providing the child with puzzles, searches,
mysteries to solve, things to make and draw, flaps to lift, things to touch and feel, the list goes on and on."

Testimonial: We have quite a few of the Early Reader series books & enjoy them ALL! Some we have: "Sam Sheep Can't Sleep," "Frog on a Log," "Fat Cat on a Mat," "Big Pig on a Dig," "Potty Time", "1001 Things to Spot in a Town."  We love the simple, easy to read nature of the early reader series and Abby even tries to 'read' along with the books. The rhyming nature and simple words make these books a fun read while being at the right 'age level' to promote early reading skills. The illustrations are also highly engaging and Abby loves to find things like the "hidden duck" on each page. We highly recommend Usborne books!!!!!!

  • "What Makes a Rainbow" Book
    Written by: Betty Ann Schwartz
    Illustrated by: Dona Turner
Published by: Piggy Toes Press; Copywrite 2000

    Website: http://www.amazon.com
Explanation: "A rainbow of ribbons magically appear when you open the pages of this innovative book! Toddlers will love listening to the charming story and seeing a different colored ribbon with the turn of each page. The last page is sure to delight with all the colors of the rainbow. What a fun way to learn colors!"
Testimonial: Abby's ST gave us this book when we transitioned out of EI. We LOVE it! What a fun way to learn colors!! Each page is all about one color and adds a new color to the rainbow you are forming for the end of the book.  I thought that rainbow would get torn right out by Abby, but it's still intact after 6 months of regular use :) We highly recommend this book for 1-4yr olds.

  • The Wiggles "Dance Party"
    Company: The Wiggles
    Website: http://www.amazon.com
Explanation: "The Wiggles, that wacky outfit wowing kids from Down Under, welcome preschoolers for a lively, loopy musical fiesta on their sixth release, Dance Party. In addition to Murray, Greg, Jeff, and Anthony, Oz's answer to the Fab Four, chiming in on this 15-song charmer of a dance- and sing-along are the usual wiggly suspects--Henry the Octopus, Wags the Dog, Captain Feathersword, and the remarkably light-on-her-feet hostess of the party, Dorothy the Dinosaur. Along with all the fancy footwork, expect the frenetic pace of all Wiggles offerings (nobody's attention span is apt to be challenged by a 15-segment, 40-minute video), but also expect a less polished production than in previous titles. The gang's unfamiliar hair styles and other telltale clues bear the trappings of an early performance. Which in no way dilutes the fun-for-all delirium. In fact, the goofier-than-ever gags and graceful child dance troupes featured on a couple of numbers here propel this tape into top-shelf Wiggles territory. Songs include "Can You Point Your Fingers and Do the Twist?," "Wags the Dog," "Five Little Joeys," "Di Dicki Do Dum," "I'm a Cow," "Do the Flap," "On Your Holiday," "Hat on My Head," "The Magic Bag," "Brown Girl in the Ring," "Georgia's Song," "Our Boat Is Rocking on the Sea," "Nicky Nacky Nocky Noo," "Dorothy's Dance Party," and "The Big Red Car."
Testimonial: Abby's PT recommended this video to aide in working on gross motor skills when she was first standing. It really helped motivate Abby to stand up and move, dance around with the Wiggles. Though I find the Wiggles to be completely annoying ;) I love that they engage Abby in motor activity by following their dance moves which challenge Abby's gross and fine motor skills.  This isn't a cough potato movie!! We also recommend "Hoop-Dee-Do" for the same reasons (these are the only 2 Wiggles videos we own).

Led by wacky professor Quigley, Tad joins Js jumping on trampolines and Ks practicing karate kicks as new letters learn their sounds. Fun songs will have kids singing letter sounds in time!  With just the right mix of education and entertainment, LeapFrog videos delight and engage through humor and encourage children to respond. With the Letter Factory Video, fun songs will have your child singing the letter sounds in no time."
Testimonial: Abby just got these videos and is engaged by them. She really enjoys the fun way they teach letters along with their sounds. I like that the video emphasizes the sounds letters makes, not just naming the letters. The age recommendations are 2-5 years by the company, but I don't believe Abby would have enjoyed this video much before the age of 3 years.

Personal Testimonial: We loved this video and Lizzy continues to watch it now and then. And if you find yourself inadvertently singing “hey, hey, I gotta go” in public, it’s not nearly as bad as finding yourself singing “She’s a super duper pooper” from the Potty Time video !
